September - December 2023
We had a wonderful first term in First and Second Class. The students worked really hard in all areas of the Curriculum; writing reports, finishing several readers and expanding their vocabulary through learning rhymes and poems amongst many other activities in English. The children learned many poems and songs in our Gaeilge lessons which bring our native language to life, with ‘Mo Bhricfeasta’, ‘Bualadh Bos’ agus ‘Siorc san Uisce’ amongst the favourites. The children covered all Strands of the Maths Curriculum and enjoyed using concrete materials to expand their understanding of Place Value and Measures.
In SESE, we worked really hard on our map making skills and People Who Help Us amongst other Strands. We loved interviewing our grandparents about what school and Christmas was like when they were young. We made personal timelines and displayed personal artefacts from when we were young in our class museum. We performed a selection of the poems and songs we learned in September and October for our families before the Mid Term Break. Our favourites were ‘I Can’t Stop
Tapping My Feet’, ‘Gobbolino’ and ‘Winnie the Witch’. We enjoyed singing ‘The Ghost of John’ in rounds. It was very spooky! We are also learning how to play the ukulele!
We were really lucky to be able to travel to the TUS in November and December wherewe learned athletics skills in a state of the art arena. We also participated in Gaelic
football and hurling blitzes in TUS in November. We enjoyed painting, drawing, printing and fabric and fibre activities in Art and our pieces were proudly displayed in the classroom and received many compliments from classroom visitors!
Some of the children from First and Second Class volunteered to sing at the St. Kieran’s Community Centre Christmas Market in November which was a lovely occasion in aid of the local Wheelchair Association. The whole class sang Christmas carols in the Golden Island Shopping Centre in December and raised €537 to purchase music and maths equipment. The children received accolades from all the passers-by for bringing festive cheer to Athlone that morning.
Finally, congratulations to all the children in Second Class who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in November. We are all looking forward to you making your Communion in May, and indeed many more memories for First and Second Class in Term 2.
