Welcome to our School
A céad míle fáilte to our website. We hope you will find it useful for keeping up to date with all the latest school news!
Ardnagrath National School offers an excellent opportunity for pupils to enjoy their primary education in a friendly, welcoming and child-centred environment. We promote an inclusive, caring, positive, supportive and safe environment where all are valued. We pride ourselves in treating each individual pupil equally. We are closely connected to the local community and have excellent relationship with all local associations. It is a pleasure to work here and to see pupils go about their learning in a happy and friendly environment. We also love to welcome back our past pupils through TY placements or work placements and we are always proud of the young adults they become.
Our main goal is to ensure that our children are safe, happy, confident and equipped with the skills to enable them to develop into well rounded, responsible members of the community. Supported by dedicated and caring staff your child will have opportunities to always look for ways of improving on their continuous learning journey through life.
It is with immense pride that I carry out my duties as Principal and I am extremely thankful to all those who help make Ardnagrath National School the unique, happy and special place that it is.

School Background 1850 – present
Ardnagrath National School
1850
Ardnagrath National School has a long tradition of education. The first school, which replaced the local hedge school in 1850 served as a recognised centre of education for the community for over 100 years. That school had 2 teachers, 2 classrooms, 5 desks and a few forums which seated 100 pupils. Since then, the school has expanded and has continued to develop over the years.
1963 2013
Moving from the original location a new school consisting of “2 classrooms, 2 cloakrooms and male and female toilets” was opened on the present site in 1963 at a cost of €14,500. In the intervening years, as numbers increased and new educational practises were introduced more extensions were added including 2 classrooms, a gym, a computer room and a staff room. Play areas and pitch facilities were also developed and the school car park was completed in 2014. The most recent extension consisting of 2 classrooms, a new entrance and office area was completed in 2015, while the Croí agus Caoi unit opened in September 2018. We are currently awaiting the building of a new extension which we hope have completed in the coming year.
Throughout the decades all of this development has been achieved with the generous and continuous support of parents, the dedication of various Boards of Management, school staff and Parent Associations, the goodwill of the local community and the many voluntary hours given by countless numbers of people. We are and continue to be forever grateful for this as this is what make Ardnagrath National School so special.

Funny Memory from school: One day I was rushing into school early to get the Aistear play area ready for the infants. I got ready really fast that morning and I came to school as early as I could. Everything was fine until the first break time when one of the infants asked why was I wearing two different shoes. When I looked at my feet I noticed that I had worn two different boots into school that day. I got ready so fast that morning that I thought I had grabbed the same shoes but it turned out that they were different. The infants laughed so much, they thought it was so funny that I was wearing two different shoes in school that day. I am now very careful and make sure that I have the same shoes on every day coming to school.

Funny school memory: I remember when I first started teaching I took my class to play in a Gaelic football blitz. The children were not in to Gaelic football and only had time for soccer. When the ball went up for the hop, the boys went in to header it. I was shouting from the sideline that it wasn’t soccer they were playing and to catch the ball! The boys finally started playing Gaelic football. They were being badly beaten until they started playing soccer again and managed to get a few goals to win the game! It was a great day!

Funny memory from when you were in school: When I was in 5th Class, I decided to put the clock in our classroom forward 10 minutes. The teacher, unaware of this prank, proceeded to let us out of school 10 minutes early. All was great until one of my classmates met my mother in the local shop at 10 to 3 and decided to tell her why we were out of school 10 minutes early. It’s fair to say she didn’t see the funny side of this prank!

My funniest memory from school: One day in class, the teacher asked me to get books from the cupboard. As I approached and opened the door, something unexpectedly plummeted onto my shoe. To my absolute horror, it was a mouse staring up at me with wide eyes. In a moment of sheer panic, I instinctively kicked my leg up, sending the mouse flying through the air. The teacher rushed over, and chaos ensued as the entire class erupted into screams. From that memorable day, I refrained from volunteering to fetch books from the cupboard.
